An expedition to the edge of the Coral Triangle — where blue whales surface and pristine reefs begin.
Timor-Leste is one of the last true marine frontiers in Southeast Asia. Its coastline sits beside extremely deep water, creating a powerful migration corridor for large marine life.
During October, the waters between Dili and Atauro can become a passage for blue whales, sperm whales, dolphins and other cetaceans. This expedition is timed to place the group in the right region during the most exciting part of the season.
This is not a standard dive holiday. The journey is built around open-ocean whale and dolphin safaris, reef diving around Atauro, relaxed island time and a final cultural day in Dili.

Two dedicated whale safari days combined with Atauro Island reef diving.
The expedition includes two full days of open-ocean whale and dolphin tracking, additional scouting during the Dili–Atauro crossings, approximately 13 guided reef dives on Atauro Island, and orientation dives in Dili.
Whale sightings are never guaranteed. The itinerary is designed with dedicated safari days and flexible routing, but all wildlife encounters depend on sea conditions, animal movement and local operational guidance.

Guided reef and wall dives on Atauro Island's pristine coral systems across multiple dive days, with flexible site selection based on conditions and visibility.
Dili orientation dives
Two relaxed orientation dives in Dili on Day 3 to check equipment, weighting and cameras before the main expedition rhythm begins.

Departure for Timor-Leste
Depart from Europe or your home airport for the international journey to Dili. Flight routing and any required Bali or Singapore connection are confirmed separately.

Arrival in Dili, Timor-Leste. Meet-and-greet at Dili International Airport and private transfer to the hotel. Welcome briefing, expedition orientation and group dinner.

Dili familiarisation dives
Equipment setup and two relaxed local dives to check weighting, comfort, cameras and gear before the main expedition rhythm begins.
12 October 2027
Blue Whale Safari I
Full-day boat-based wildlife search in the deep waters between Dili and Atauro. Blue whales, sperm whales, dolphins and other cetaceans. All encounters operated respectfully and according to local guidance.

Transfer to Atauro Island
Private boat transfer to Atauro Island with whale and dolphin scouting if conditions allow. Arrival, check-in and island orientation. Optional easy reef dive or snorkel session.
14–17 October 2027

Four days of guided reef diving around Atauro Island. Two guided dives per day across coral slopes, reef gardens and walls. Non-divers enjoy snorkeling, beach time and island exploration.

Final Atauro dive day
Two morning dives followed by camera rinse, image backup and a relaxed evening. Optional mid-expedition photo review.

Return boat transfer from Atauro to Dili with whale and dolphin scouting if conditions allow. Afternoon hotel check-in, rest and free evening in Dili.

Blue Whale Safari II
Second dedicated ocean safari day. Increases the strength and flexibility of the expedition. May be adapted according to local advice and conditions.

Questions before you join
Are blue whale encounters guaranteed?
No. Blue whale encounters depend entirely on natural animal behavior, ocean conditions, and seasonal patterns. This expedition is timed for the migration season and structured with dedicated safari days, but no wildlife encounter can ever be guaranteed.

Certified divers with open water experience and comfort in blue water conditions. Advanced Open Water or equivalent is strongly recommended. Specific requirements are confirmed during the inquiry process.
Can non-divers join?
Yes. Non-diving ocean lovers participate fully in the whale safari days on snorkel and join the cultural program in Dili. A companion program can be arranged on request.
When is the best season for blue whales?
Blue whales are most frequently encountered in Timor-Leste between October and November. This expedition is timed for the peak of the migration window.
