A black-sand macro expedition for divers who want the strange, rare and unforgettable.

Lembeh Strait is the legendary macro and muck diving capital of Indonesia — a volcanic black-sand world where the smallest marine creatures often become the most unforgettable encounters of the journey.

This boutique expedition runs from 11–25 March 2027. The journey starts in Frankfurt on 11 March, flying via Singapore to Manado, North Sulawesi. From there, the group transfers to Lembeh Strait for the core dive expedition. On 24 March, after the diving program has ended, the group joins a final dry-land expedition organized by the dive center before overnighting in Manado. The return flight departs from Manado on 25 March, routing via Singapore back to Frankfurt.

The program is designed for underwater photographers, macro lovers and experienced recreational divers who prefer a slow, deliberate diving rhythm over rushed sightseeing. The focus is guide-led critter tracking, careful buoyancy, patient observation and long, photo-friendly dives in one of the richest macro environments in the Coral Triangle.

Potential subjects may include mimic octopus, wonderpus, frogfish, nudibranchs, pygmy seahorses, Lembeh sea dragons, shrimps, crabs, pipefish, cuttlefish and other rare macro life. Wildlife is natural and never guaranteed; daily site selection depends on conditions, guide sightings and safety decisions.

22 included day dives + 3 special night dives in Lembeh Strait.

The included dive package is built around 11 guided boat-diving days in Lembeh Strait, with 22 included daytime boat dives: two guided boat dives per diving day, with cylinders and weights included.

In addition, three special night dives are included and will be organized on suitable evenings according to local conditions, safety and guide decision: one Mandarin Dive, one Night Dive and one Blackwater Dive.

The focus is not speed or maximum distance, but quality observation: controlled buoyancy, careful sand-habitat positioning, patient searching and enough time for photography. Dive sites are selected daily according to local conditions, recent critter sightings and the experience level of the group.

The special night dives are included in the expedition package, but their exact dates may be adjusted locally depending on weather, sea conditions, guest readiness and operational safety.

Questions before you join

Why is there no diving on 24 March?

24 March is planned as a dry expedition day after the diving program has ended. This supports a safe pre-flight surface interval before the return journey from Manado on 25 March.

What level of diver is this best for?

The expedition is best for certified divers with calm buoyancy, patience and interest in macro photography or small marine life. New divers may join only if they are comfortable with slow, controlled diving and careful sand-habitat behavior.

Is this suitable for non-divers?

Yes, non-divers can join as Ocean Companions. The Lembeh resort stay, meals, spa options and the final dry-land expedition day can create a relaxed non-diving program. Additional land experiences may be arranged on request.

Are rare critters guaranteed?

No. Lembeh is one of the world's strongest macro destinations, but all wildlife is natural. Specific animals such as mimic octopus, wonderpus, frogfish, Lembeh sea dragon or nudibranchs cannot be guaranteed.

Can I book this expedition instantly online?

No. This expedition is inquiry-based. We confirm flight availability, room availability, dive package details, group size and diver suitability before taking a deposit.

Are the Mandarin Dive, Night Dive and Blackwater Dive included?

Yes. These three special night dives are included in the expedition package and will be organized on suitable evenings during the Lembeh stay. The exact evenings will be decided locally by the dive center according to conditions and safety.

How many dives are included?

The package includes 22 daytime boat dives plus 3 special night dives: one Mandarin Dive, one Night Dive and one Blackwater Dive. This makes 25 included guided dives in total, subject to weather, safety and local conditions.
