Why specialist travel and diving insurance matters
Dive destinations in the Coral Triangle can involve domestic flights, boat transfers, remote islands, liveaboards and limited access to advanced medical care. Standard travel insurance may exclude scuba diving, hyperbaric treatment, remote evacuation or diving beyond a specified depth.
Appropriate travel and diving insurance is strongly recommended and may be required by the responsible dive operator or liveaboard.
Coverage to check before travel
Your policy should be suitable for your full itinerary and planned diving. Consider whether it covers:
- overseas emergency medical treatment;
- hyperbaric chamber treatment and associated medical assessment;
- emergency evacuation by boat, vehicle, helicopter or aircraft;
- repatriation to your home country where medically necessary;
- scuba diving to the depths and in the conditions planned;
- liveaboard diving, repetitive diving, Nitrox and night diving where applicable;
- trip cancellation and interruption;
- missed connections, weather delays and additional accommodation;
- lost, delayed or damaged baggage, including dive and photography equipment;
- personal liability and search-and-rescue costs where available;
- pre-existing medical conditions that have been declared and accepted.
Important exclusions to review
Do not rely only on a summary of benefits. Read the full policy wording and check:
- maximum permitted depth and certification requirements;
- whether diving must be supervised or conducted with a recognised operator;
- exclusions for currents, wreck penetration, technical diving or solo diving;
- requirements relating to medical fitness, alcohol or medication;
- geographical limits and exclusions for government travel advisories;
- limits, deductibles and depreciation applied to specialist equipment;
- time limits and evidence required for cancellation or delay claims.
Insurance evidence
Keep your policy number, emergency assistance telephone number and insurer details available offline. A dive operator may ask for evidence of diving accident or evacuation cover before allowing participation.
Remote destinations and evacuation
Evacuation from a remote island or liveaboard can be complex, weather-dependent and expensive. Confirm whether the insurer arranges assistance directly, whether prior authorisation is required and whether you may need to pay costs before reimbursement.
Travel companions and non-divers
Every traveller should have suitable cover. Non-diving companions may need the same cancellation, medical, evacuation and baggage protection even if they do not require diving accident benefits.
Before departure
- Provide the insurer with accurate information about the itinerary and activities.
- Declare relevant medical conditions as required by the policy.
- Confirm that all destination countries and transit points are covered.
- Save the policy and emergency contacts offline.
- Share emergency details with a travel companion where appropriate.
