Expedition Highlights
Why Lembeh Strait?
Lembeh Strait is not a destination you stumble upon — it is one you seek out deliberately. This narrow volcanic channel between the island of Lembeh and the North Sulawesi mainland holds a higher concentration of rare and bizarre macro life than anywhere else on the planet. The black volcanic sand that lines its floor is, to the untrained eye, unremarkable. To a macro photographer, it is a stage.
Mimic octopus, flamboyant cuttlefish, hairy frogfish, blue-ringed octopus, Rhinopias scorpionfish, dozens of nudibranch species, and creatures that have no common name — Lembeh reveals them all, dive after dive, with a consistency that defies expectation. The strait's protected waters and year-round visibility make it the most reliably productive muck diving site on Earth.
At night, the water column transforms entirely. Blackwater diving here draws pelagic larvae, juvenile cephalopods, and open-ocean rarities to the surface — a completely different cast of characters, suspended in the dark above 300 metres of open water. It is one of the most extraordinary diving experiences available anywhere.
Is This Expedition Right for You?
This expedition is for you if…
- You are passionate about macro or underwater photography
- You are comfortable with 3–4 dives per day in calm, shallow water
- You value a guided, curated experience over independent diving
- You want a small, like-minded group — not a dive resort crowd
- You are seeking species and encounters unavailable on reef dives
This may not be right if…
- You prefer colourful coral reefs and large pelagic encounters
- You are not comfortable diving over black sand or in low-viz conditions
- You are looking for a relaxed, resort-style dive holiday
- You are a beginner diver with fewer than 50 logged dives
Our Approach
Every Coral Triangle expedition is escorted from arrival to departure. Your expedition leader handles all logistics, site selection, daily briefings, and critter identification — so you arrive at each dive site focused entirely on the water. We rotate across Lembeh's most productive sites based on conditions and recent sightings, never following a fixed schedule when the sea offers something better.
Diving here is slow and methodical. We do not rush. A single dive may cover 30 metres of sand and yield 15 extraordinary subjects. The pace is deliberate, the attention to detail is absolute, and the results speak for themselves.
