Malapascua Island, Philippines – Thresher Sharks, Reefs & Island Diving

A legendary small-island diving destination in the Philippines, best known for thresher shark encounters, Gato Island, mandarin fish dives and relaxed island dive culture.

Malapascua is a small island with a big legend. Before sunrise, divers head into the blue for one of scuba diving’s most iconic encounters: the thresher shark.

With its long elegant tail and ghostlike movements, the thresher shark is unforgettable. But Malapascua is more than one famous shark dive: Gato Island, sea snakes, reef dives, mandarin fish and local macro sites add depth to the story.

The island itself has barefoot charm: sandy paths, beach restaurants, dive boats on the horizon and early mornings full of anticipation.

Why Dive Malapascua?

Malapascua is one of the most iconic diving destinations in the Philippines, especially for divers who dream of seeing thresher sharks in the wild. The island is famous for early-morning offshore shoal dives, where divers descend before sunrise and wait calmly in the blue for a chance to see these elegant sharks.

But Malapascua is not only about threshers. Gato Island adds tunnels, sea snakes, whitetip reef sharks and macro life, while Lighthouse and the local reefs offer mandarin fish, night diving and smaller subjects. This makes Malapascua a strong choice for divers who want a mix of shark encounters, island atmosphere and varied Visayas diving.

For Coral Triangle Expeditions, Malapascua is selected for its rare thresher shark potential, its barefoot island character and its excellent role as part of a larger Philippines / Visayas expedition.

Malapascua Diving Guide

Recommended Level
Advanced Open Water is strongly recommended for the main thresher shark dives. Some local reef sites may be easier, but the key offshore shark dives are better suited to confident divers.
Visibility
Usually around 10–30 metres, depending on dive site, season and sea conditions.
Water Temperature
Generally 27–30°C. A 3mm wetsuit is usually suitable, but repetitive divers may prefer extra thermal protection.
Type of Diving
Offshore shoal dives, thresher shark dives, reef dives, tunnel / swim-through dives, macro dives, mandarin fish dives and optional night dives.
Marine Life
Thresher sharks, sea snakes, whitetip reef sharks, mandarin fish, nudibranchs, frogfish and reef fish.
Best Time to Visit
Thresher shark diving is possible year-round. Calmer overall conditions are often March to June and during dry-season windows, but final planning should always consider weather, sea conditions and local operator advice.
What to Expect
Malapascua is best approached as a carefully planned dive journey. The main shark dives usually require early starts and suitable diver experience. Gato Island, Lighthouse and local reef sites add variety, making the destination stronger when planned with enough time for both shark dives and supporting dive sites.

The historic thresher shark cleaning station and one of the most iconic Malapascua dive sites. Conditions and current shark activity should always be checked locally.

Gato Island

An excellent day-trip site with tunnel, sea snakes, whitetip reef sharks, reef life and macro subjects. One of the strongest variety dives in the Malapascua area.

Lighthouse

Known for sunset mandarin fish dives and relaxed macro / night diving. A good contrast to the early-morning offshore shark dives.

North Point

A local reef site with coral life, reef fish and macro subjects. Useful for adding variety to the programme.

Underwater Photography in Malapascua

Malapascua is a strong destination for photographers who want a mix of wide-angle, shark and reef opportunities, with some macro possibilities. Wide-angle equipment is useful for thresher sharks, Gato Island, reef scenes and divers over blue water.

Macro equipment can also be useful for mandarin fish, nudibranchs, frogfish and smaller local subjects. Malapascua is not a pure macro destination like Dauin or Anilao, but it offers enough variety to keep photographers engaged when the programme includes more than just shark dives.

For photography-focused groups, the best Malapascua experience comes from realistic planning: early-morning shark dives, enough repeat opportunities, Gato Island day trips, possible mandarin fish dives and slower local dives when conditions allow.

For Non-Diving Companions

Malapascua can work for non-diving companions who enjoy a relaxed, simple island atmosphere. Activities may include beach time, island walks, snorkeling, sunset bars, relaxed cafés and slow days by the sea.

This is not a luxury resort or nightlife destination. It is best for guests who enjoy barefoot island charm, casual beach restaurants and a quieter tropical atmosphere while divers focus on thresher shark dives, Gato Island and local reef diving.

Responsible Shark & Reef Diving

Thresher sharks are wild animals. Divers must stay calm, avoid chasing, avoid sudden movements and follow guide instructions at cleaning stations and offshore shoal sites. Sightings should never be treated as guaranteed.

Around reefs, tunnels and macro sites, good buoyancy is essential. Coral Triangle Expeditions supports respectful shark encounters, careful dive planning and responsible diving that protects both Malapascua’s marine life and the long-term reputation of its dive sites.
