Bali: Tulamben, Kubu & Amed, Indonesia – USAT Liberty Wreck, Macro & Shore Diving

East Bali’s quieter volcanic coast: shore diving, black sand beaches, sunrise wreck dives, macro sites, night diving and the legendary USAT Liberty Wreck.

Tulamben, Kubu and Amed show a calmer, more atmospheric side of Bali. Here the mountains meet the sea, black volcanic beaches lead directly to dive sites and many dives begin from shore.

The star is the USAT Liberty Wreck, one of the world’s most accessible and atmospheric wreck dives. At sunrise, when first light touches the wreck and bumphead parrotfish move through the shadows, the experience can feel almost spiritual.

Beyond the Liberty, the area offers walls, macro sites, night dives, artificial reefs and peaceful coastal villages.

Why Dive Tulamben, Kubu & Amed?

Tulamben, Kubu and Amed are ideal for divers who want easy shore diving, strong variety and a quieter side of Bali. The region offers wrecks, black-sand macro sites, reefs, walls, artificial structures and excellent night diving without the high-current intensity of Nusa Penida.

The USAT Liberty Wreck is the main highlight: a large, coral-covered wreck accessible from shore and suitable for multiple dive profiles. Around Tulamben and nearby sites, divers can also explore Seraya Secrets, Tulamben Wall, Coral Garden, Kubu / Boga Wreck and Amed’s scenic coastal reefs.

For Coral Triangle Expeditions, East Bali is selected because it adds wreck, macro and shore-diving variety to a Bali expedition. It balances the more advanced Nusa Lembongan / Nusa Penida section perfectly.

Underwater Photography in Tulamben, Kubu & Amed

East Bali is a strong destination for photographers because it offers both macro and wide-angle opportunities in a relatively accessible shore-diving setting. Wide-angle is useful for the USAT Liberty Wreck, Tulamben Wall, Kubu / Boga Wreck and scenic reef structures.

Macro is especially useful for Seraya Secrets, black-sand slopes, night dives and smaller subjects such as nudibranchs, frogfish, shrimps and ghost pipefish.

For photography-focused groups, the best East Bali experience comes from repeat dives, flexible timing, sunrise or night wreck dives, careful shore entries and enough time for both wreck photography and slow macro exploration.
