Papua New Guinea is a remote Pacific dive destination with a mix of coral reefs, walls, seamounts, muck habitat and Second World War wrecks. Our current land-based portfolio focuses on three contrasting regions: Kimbe Bay, Kavieng and Tufi.

The country rewards travellers who accept more complex domestic logistics in exchange for low-crowd diving and a stronger expedition feel than mainstream tropical resort destinations.

How to choose a PNG dive region

• Coral seamounts and schooling fish: Kimbe Bay combines offshore pinnacles, coral gardens and blue-water fish action.
• Drift diving, wrecks and pelagics: Kavieng is the strongest fit for experienced divers looking for current, reef edges and wartime history.
• Reefs, macro and culture: Tufi mixes offshore reef diving with sheltered fjord sites and a distinctive land programme.

When to dive Papua New Guinea

PNG can be dived year-round, but conditions vary between the Bismarck, Solomon and Coral Sea sides of the country. PADI currently notes different stronger periods by region rather than one national peak season. This makes destination-specific planning particularly important for PNG.

Water temperature remains tropical, while visibility can range from clear offshore reefs to intentionally lower-visibility macro and mangrove-influenced sites.

Resort-based diving and liveaboards

PNG supports both formats, but remote land-based lodges are a major part of the experience and can provide repeated access to a focused local reef system. Liveaboards are useful for broader regional coverage where schedules are available. Our current country hub emphasises the land-based destinations already published on the site.

Planning a PNG dive trip

Port Moresby is the main international gateway, followed by domestic flights to regional centres. Overland alternatives are limited for many dive areas, so missed connections can have a larger impact than in more developed island destinations. Build extra transfer margin into the itinerary and confirm domestic baggage rules when travelling with dive equipment.
